What It's Really Like to Live Full-Time in a Custom Sleeper Truck as a Couple

When most people picture a truck driver's sleeping situation, they imagine a narrow bunk behind the cab — barely enough room to roll over, let alone actually live in. For a solo driver grinding cross-country routes, that's often the reality.
But when you're a team driver running expedited freight with Hyfield Trucking, the truck is a different animal entirely. And for couples who've made the switch, the quality of that living space changes everything about life on the road.
We asked our contractor teams to describe what it's actually like. Here's what they said.
First Impression: "Wait, This Is a Truck?"
The most common reaction new Hyfield drivers have when they first step inside a custom sleeper: disbelief. Not because it's fancy in a show-off kind of way — but because it's genuinely functional in ways they weren't expecting.
Hyfield runs 100-to-150-inch ARI and Bolt custom sleepers on Freightliner and Western Star chassis. These aren't factory-spec trucks with a bunk thrown in. They're purpose-built living spaces designed for people who spend weeks — and in many cases, months — at a stretch on the road.
"Great staff support system and the most incredible truck ever!" says Dave, a Hyfield contractor. His co-driver Laura agrees: "Our truck is beautiful."

The Kitchen: More Than a Microwave
The kitchen in a Hyfield custom sleeper is genuinely usable — not just a glorified mini-fridge with a hot plate.
Standard features in Hyfield's sleeper fleet include:
• Full-size RV refrigerator (not a dorm-room mini fridge — an actual refrigerator)
• Microwave/convection oven
• Running water with a sink
• Counter space for prep
What this means in practice: couples can stock food and actually cook on the road. That's not just a quality-of-life upgrade — it's a significant financial one. Eating real meals instead of truck stop food every day adds up fast, both in savings and in how you feel after a few weeks on the road.
Teams regularly describe pulling off at a scenic rest area, making a real meal, and eating with a view that most people would pay good money for.

The Bedroom: Built for Two
This is the non-negotiable for couple teams, and Hyfield built the fleet around it. The standard sleeper configuration for same-household teams features a full-size bed — wide enough for two adults to actually sleep comfortably, not just survive a rest break.
For teams where the co-drivers aren't same-household (business partners, siblings, etc.), two-bunk layouts are available.
Satellite TV rounds out the downtime setup — so when you're parked for the night or waiting on a load, you're not staring at the ceiling. Multiple teams describe binge-watching shows together, staying caught up on sports, or just unwinding after a long run exactly the way they would at home.
"We gave up our apartment," more than one team has said. When your truck is nicer than your last place, the math changes.
Climate Control: No More Idle Debates
One of the most underrated quality-of-life features on a Hyfield truck: the rooftop A/C unit combined with an APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) or generator setup. This means the climate control runs independently of the engine — which matters enormously in summer heat or winter cold when you're parked and trying to sleep.
No more running the main engine for hours to stay comfortable. No more waking up in a sweat or waking your co-driver to start the truck. The temperature just stays where you set it.
The Bathroom: Yes, Many Units Have One
Most Hyfield units include a bathroom and shower. Read that again — a bathroom and shower, inside the truck.
For anyone who's spent time in OTR trucking, the value of this is immediately obvious. Truck stop showers on a schedule, carrying a shower bag, waiting in line — those are very specific inconveniences that become non-issues when your truck has its own bathroom.
For couples, this is frequently one of the most-cited quality-of-life differences between their Hyfield truck and any previous driving setup. Please note our bathroom trucks are given out based on revenue and not seniority.

The Lifestyle You Actually Build
What's most striking about talking to Hyfield teams isn't the specs — it's how they describe their actual lives. Because the truck is genuinely livable, they don't just endure time on the road. They build a life there.
Teams describe pulling off near national parks for the weekend between loads. Camping setups in scenic spots. Visiting family along their routes. Finding local restaurants in cities they never would have explored otherwise. Bringing their dogs and cats along (Hyfield is pet friendly). Even couples who were skeptical about full-time truck life describe a kind of freedom they didn't expect.
"We've been to places we never would have seen otherwise," says Peter W., a Hyfield contractor. His co-driver Melissa adds: "We find time to take the truck camping over the weekends or find something to do near our delivery."
What to Expect in Your First Few Weeks
There is an adjustment period — any honest account of full-time truck life will acknowledge that. Sharing a small space 24/7 with your co-driver requires communication, flexibility, and a sense of humor. The schedule takes getting used to. The first few loads will feel unfamiliar.
That's why Hyfield's peer-to-peer mentor program exists. Your mentor has done all of this already. They know what the adjustment feels like, they know what helps, and they're available when you need them — day or night.
Most teams describe the first 30 to 90 days as the real learning curve. After that, the rhythm clicks. And once it does, the overwhelming majority say the same thing: they can't imagine going back to what they were doing before.
