Brake Safety Week 2026: Be Ready August 23–29

CVSA’s annual Brake Safety Week is coming up August 23–29, 2026, and commercial vehicle inspectors throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico will be placing increased attention on brake systems and components.

For Hyfield teams, now is a good time to make sure your truck is ready before the increased inspections begin.

What Inspectors Will Be Looking For

During Brake Safety Week, certified inspectors will conduct commercial motor vehicle inspections with a particular focus on braking systems. Trucks found with brake-related out-of-service violations may be removed from service until the problem has been corrected.

This year, CVSA has announced an additional focus on brake drums and rotors. Inspectors will be collecting information on their condition as part of the 2026 campaign. Damaged, cracked or otherwise compromised drums and rotors can reduce braking efficiency and, in severe cases, pieces can break away from the vehicle and create an additional roadway hazard.

Your Pre-Trip Matters

Brake Safety Week is another reminder of why a thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspection is so important.

Before hitting the road, take the time to look over your braking system and watch for anything that doesn't look, sound or feel right. Pay particular attention to:

• Brake drums and rotors for visible cracks or damage

• Brake hoses and lines for leaks, wear or rubbing

• Air leaks or abnormal loss of air pressure

• Brake adjustment and proper operation

• ABS warning lights

• Loose, damaged or missing brake components

• Changes in braking performance or unusual noises

Brake Safety Isn't Just One Week

Although Brake Safety Week brings increased attention to braking systems, proper brake inspection and maintenance should be part of every trip.

Brake-related violations continue to represent the largest percentage of out-of-service violations found during roadside commercial vehicle inspections, according to CVSA. Staying ahead of maintenance issues protects you, your co-driver, your equipment and everyone sharing the road.

CVSA also conducts an unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement initiative each year, meaning increased brake inspections can happen at any time — not just during the announced August campaign.
