Heads Up, Drivers: Operation Safe Driver Week Is Coming July 12–18

Mark your calendars — from July 12 through July 18, law enforcement across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico will be running CVSA's annual Operation Safe Driver Week. Translation: more eyes on the road, more traffic stops, and more citations handed out for the driving habits that cause the most crashes.

This isn't a maintenance check or a paperwork audit like Roadcheck. This one's about how you drive. Officers will be watching for five specific things:

Speeding. Still the number one factor in fatal crashes, year after year. That includes going too fast for conditions, not just blowing past the posted limit.

Distracted driving. Texting, holding your phone, fiddling with an app while you're rolling — all fair game for a citation, and all things we know you already work hard to avoid.

Following too closely. Tailgating a car or another truck. Give yourself room to react.

Seat belt violations. Simple as it sounds, this one still shows up on the citation list every single year. Buckle up, every time, no exceptions.

Improper lane changes. No signal, or cutting in and out of traffic without giving folks around you a heads up.

Here's the thing — none of this should feel like new information. If you're already driving the way Hyfield expects, this week doesn't change much for you. But a citation during Operation Safe Driver Week doesn't just cost you in the moment. It follows you. Driver-side violations feed straight into your CSA score, and that score sticks around on your record and shapes how often you get pulled in for inspection down the road. One ticket in July can mean more stops for months after.

So consider this your friendly nudge: give yourself a little extra following distance this week, keep the phone out of your hand, and don't skip the seat belt for a "quick" stretch of road. Treat it like any other week — because that's really the whole point of the campaign.
