Each year, commercial vehicles across North America are inspected during the International Roadcheck, a major safety enforcement initiative organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance. This inspection event involves thousands of inspectors across the United States, Canada, and Mexico and is designed to ensure drivers and vehicles are operating safely and in compliance with regulations.
The 2026 International Roadcheck will take place May 12–14, 2026, and it’s important for all Hyfield Trucking contractors to begin preparing now.
What is International Roadcheck?
During this 72-hour period, law enforcement officers and safety inspectors conduct inspections at weigh stations, inspection sites, and through mobile patrols. While drivers should always be operating safely and legally, this event places an even greater emphasis on compliance.
Inspections typically follow the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a comprehensive 37-step process that examines both the driver and the vehicle.
Vehicles or drivers found to have serious violations may be placed out of service, meaning they cannot continue operating until the issue is corrected.
2026 Focus Areas
Each year the CVSA highlights specific focus areas for inspectors. For 2026, the emphasis will be on:
Driver Focus: ELD Falsification or Manipulation
Inspectors will be paying close attention to Electronic Logging Device (ELD) records to ensure drivers are accurately recording their hours of service.
Things inspectors may check include:
Proper use of the ELD system
Accurate duty status entries
Signs of log falsification or tampering
Supporting documents that match logged hours
Drivers should always ensure their logs are complete, accurate, and up to date before heading out on a load.
Vehicle Focus: Freight Securement
Improperly secured cargo can lead to dangerous situations on the road. Because of this, inspectors will be focusing on how freight is secured and whether it meets federal requirements.
Areas inspectors may examine include:
Load bars and straps
Properly secured cargo inside dry vans
Condition of securement equipment
Proper placement of cargo to prevent shifting
Taking a few extra minutes to verify that freight is properly secured can help prevent violations and keep everyone safer on the road.
