How to Start Team Trucking with Zero Experience | Hyfield Trucking

A husband and wife team standing in front of a tractor in a truck stop parking lot

You and your partner have been talking about it for a while. The open road. The freedom. The idea of building something together instead of punching the clock for someone else. But every time you get close to pulling the trigger on team trucking, the same questions stop you cold:

Do you need years of experience? What kind of CDL do you need? What does a typical week actually look like? And is it really possible to make a good living doing this?

The answer to that last question is yes — but only if you go in with the right information and the right company behind you. This guide covers everything you need to know to start your team trucking career, even if you've never sat behind the wheel of a commercial truck.

What Is Team Trucking — And Why Is It Different?

Team trucking means two licensed drivers share a single truck, alternating behind the wheel so the truck keeps moving nearly around the clock. Unlike solo driving, where federal Hours of Service rules limit how long one driver can operate before mandatory rest, a team truck can cover thousands of miles in a fraction of the time.

That efficiency is extremely valuable in a segment called expedited freight — time-sensitive, mission-critical shipments that have to get there fast. Think medical equipment, automotive parts, or life sciences cargo. Carriers like FedEx Custom Critical and Panther Premium Logistics specialize in this, and they pay a premium for teams who can deliver reliably.

The result? Team drivers who make the switch to expediting routinely describe it as a revelation: drive less, make more.

Do You Need Experience to Start Team Trucking?

Here's the part most people don't expect: no, you don't need prior trucking experience to get started. At Hyfield Trucking, we've seen teams come from all walks of life — dental assistants, hospital workers, tow truck drivers, warehouse managers, even retirees looking for a second chapter. What matters isn't your resume. It's your willingness to learn and a teammate ready to ride.

What you do need:

•       A Class A or Class B CDL (Commercial Driver's License).

•       A same-household teammate — typically a spouse, partner, or family member you'll be traveling with

•       A clean driving record

•       The mindset to commit to something new

Anything else? That's what a good mentor program is for.

How the Licensing Process Works

If you or your partner don't have a CDL yet, that's the first step. Here's a quick breakdown:

Class A CDL

Required to operate combination vehicles (a tractor pulling a trailer) over 26,001 lbs. This is the most common license for long-haul and expedited tractor drivers. You'll need to pass a written knowledge test and a skills test (pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and an on-road driving exam).

Class B CDL

Required for single vehicles over 26,001 lbs without a trailer — like the straight trucks (cargo vans and sprinters) used in straight truck expediting. If you're interested in straight truck opportunities, a Class B is your path in. This license is generally faster and less expensive to obtain than a Class A.

CDL training programs vary in length from a few weeks to a few months and range in cost.

What Your First Months Actually Look Like

Getting started in expediting isn't just about having the right paperwork. It's about learning the rhythm of the road, understanding how loads and dispatching work, and building confidence behind the wheel of a commercial truck. This is where a mentor program makes all the difference.

At Hyfield Trucking, every new team is paired with an experienced peer mentor if you choose — a real driver who's done what you're about to do. Your mentor walks you through:

•       Finding and accepting the right loads

•       Trip planning and route optimization

•       Fueling, parking, and rest stop strategy

•       How to read your Hours of Service logs

•       Loading, securing, and delivering freight correctly

•       Completing paperwork and settlements

And they're available 24/7. Not a hotline — a real person who knows your name and answers when you call.

"The mentor program is amazing and will give you the tools to be successful if you use them," says Cristy H., a Hyfield contractor.

What to Expect Financially

Earnings in expedited team trucking depend on the loads you accept, the miles you run, and how efficiently you operate. What we can say is this: every contractor team who has shared their story with us describes a meaningful income shift compared to their previous work — and many describe it as the best financial decision they've made as a couple.

Hyfield offers weekly settlements, meaning you're paid every week — not bi-weekly, not monthly. That consistency matters, especially when you're getting started.

Beyond base earnings, many teams supplement their income through performance bonuses and Hyfield's referral program: earn $1,000 for every team you refer who signs on and stays with the fleet (paid in two installments at 3 and 6 months).

Is Team Trucking Right for You?

Team trucking isn't for everyone. It's a significant lifestyle change — you'll spend a lot of time in a relatively small space with your co-driver, make decisions together on the fly, and adapt to a schedule that doesn't always look like the 9-to-5 world you're used to.

But for the right couples and partners, it becomes exactly the life they were looking for. National parks on weekends. Camping between loads. Seeing parts of the country you've never visited. Building a business on the road — together.

"My husband and I both retired early from our traditional jobs and found expedited trucking as a way to travel, see the country in comfort, and get paid well while doing it," says Ramona P., a Hyfield contractor.

Ready to Take the First Step?

If you've been on the fence about team trucking, the best move you can make right now is a conversation. Talk to people who've done it. Watch a truck tour. (https://youtu.be/Bszcf50RoTc) (https://youtu.be/dJ-SvdxCczQ) Ask the real questions.

At Hyfield Trucking, we've been doing this since 2012 — founded by expedited drivers who knew what was missing in the industry and built a company to fix it. We run 100+ late-model custom sleeper trucks, partner with FedEx Custom Critical and Panther Premium Logistics, and support our teams every mile of the way.

No experience required. Just the right teammate and the willingness to go.
