In 2022, Colorado introduced a system of cameras and sensors along the Interstate 70 Mountain Express Lane to monitor and enforce traffic rules. This program later expanded to include the C-470 and northbound Interstate 25 Express Lanes. Now, Douglas County has announced that the Express Lanes Safety and Toll Enforcement Program will extend to additional major corridors, including the I-25 South Gap, Interstate 70, and US 36.

New Enforcement Measures in Effect

As of December 1, camera enforcement began on several key stretches of highway:

I-25 South Gap: From south Castle Rock to Monument.

Interstate 70: Between I-25 and Chambers Road.

US 36: Between Federal Boulevard and Table Mesa Drive.

From December 1 to January 1, drivers who illegally cross the solid white lines separating Express Lanes from general-purpose lanes will receive a warning by mail. Starting January 1, violators will face a $75 fine. Failure to pay within 20 days will result in the fine doubling to $150, according to the Douglas County News-Press.

Safety First: Why the Enforcement Matters

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) emphasizes the dangers of weaving across solid white lines. These actions “significantly increase crash risks due to the speed differential between vehicles in the Express Lanes and those in the general-purpose lanes,” said Tim Hoover, a CDOT spokesperson.

While most drivers adhere to the rules—over 90%, according to CDOT—the few who do not create significant risks. “Unfortunately, the small percentage that do weave endanger themselves and everyone else,” Hoover stated.

Proven Results from Technology

This enhanced enforcement technology has already delivered promising results. In areas where the system is active, violations have dropped by 80%. “This means accidents avoided and lives saved,” Hoover added.

As this program continues to roll out, drivers are urged to follow the rules and use Express Lanes responsibly to ensure safer journeys for everyone.
